President Donald Trump is set to commemorate his first 100 days back in office next Tuesday with a rally in Michigan—a vital state that played a significant role in his return to the White House. Scheduled to be held in Macomb County, just north of the automotive hub of Detroit, this will be his first rally since resuming presidential duties.
The White House press secretary confirmed the visit, noting Donald Trump’s enthusiasm about returning to Michigan to celebrate this milestone. The 100th day in office is often considered a crucial benchmark for assessing a president’s adherence to their campaign promises, making this an apt occasion for Trump to showcase his achievements.
Notably, Michigan was a pivotal battleground state that shifted in favor of Trump during the previous elections, signaling a key victory on his path to reclaiming the presidency.
Since his inauguration, Trump has kept official travels to a minimum, with most of his time spent on personal excursions. Apart from hosting an event promoting tax-free tips in Las Vegas, he embarked on an official trip during the initial week to address disaster sites in California and North Carolina. Later this week, he is scheduled to make his first international trip of his second term, attending Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.
The upcoming Michigan rally comes amidst a series of interactions with the state’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer. Once a vocal critic, Whitmer has expressed a willingness to collaborate on various issues, including those concerning Selfridge Air National Guard Base—a topic of mutual interest. Located in Macomb County, the base faces uncertainty as the A-10 aircraft stationed there are being phased out.
During an Oval Office ceremony earlier in the month—where Whitmer was present—Trump referenced Selfridge, expressing hopes of maintaining its operations. He expressed confidence in achieving success regarding its future.
While Whitmer was lauded by Trump during his comments, a serendipitous encounter in the Oval Office saw her caught off guard, shielding her face from the media with a folder. In regard to whether she will join Trump at the Michigan rally, her spokesperson has withheld comment.
For years, Whitmer and Michigan legislators have been advocating for a fighter mission to succeed the A-10 squadron at Selfridge. Her commitment manifested in a 2023 letter directed at the Air Force secretary under President Joe Biden’s administration. In her writing, Whitmer emphasized the importance of a fighter mission, citing its benefits for Michigan, the Air Force, and the nation alike.
