North Carolina’s standout guard Ian Jackson is making a significant move by transferring to St. John’s University, as announced by the Red Storm on Monday. Jackson, originally from the Bronx, will be returning to his roots to play under the guidance of renowned Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino.
Jackson, who was a highly ranked recruit, made a considerable impact during his freshman year at North Carolina. He averaged 11.9 points per game and displayed impressive shooting skills, with a field goal percentage of 45.6% and a 39.5% success rate from beyond the arc. Notably, Jackson marked his place in history by becoming the first North Carolina freshman to score 23 points or more in four consecutive games, ending his season with at least 20 points in eight different matches.
The Tar Heels concluded their previous season with a 23-14 overall record, securing a tie for fourth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 13-7 record. North Carolina triumphed over San Diego State during the First Four before facing elimination from the NCAA Tournament by Mississippi’s team.
St. John’s was actively in search of backcourt reinforcements due to the departure of Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith, who had completed their eligibility. Coach Pitino expressed optimism, stating, “We had big shoes to fill at the point. Kadary and Deivon were awesome. The ball is now in the hands of our next great point. Let’s go Ian!”
In Pitino’s second year at the helm, St. John’s achieved one of their most successful seasons. They equaled a school record for victories with a 31-5 tally and secured the top spot in the Big East with an 18-2 record, ultimately winning the conference tournament. The Red Storm earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the best in 25 years, winning against Omaha before falling to Arkansas, led by John Calipari, in Providence, Rhode Island.
Jackson’s high school career began with three seasons at Cardinal Hayes in the Bronx, followed by his senior year at Our Saviour Lutheran. His high school achievements include participating in the prestigious 2024 McDonald’s All-American game.
This transfer sees Jackson join other notable players who have moved to St. John’s this offseason, including former Stanford guard Oziyah Sellers, Arizona State guard Joson Sanon, and Providence forward Bryce Hopkins. Meanwhile, Red Storm forward Brady Dunlap, hindered by injuries during most of his sophomore season, has transferred to Saint Louis.
