In a poignant meeting just days before Pope Francis’ passing, U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited the Vatican over Easter weekend. On Easter Sunday, Vance, a recently converted Catholic, greeted the pope warmly. He approached the seated pope, who was in a wheelchair, exchanging pleasantries with a simple “Hello,” and expressing his delight at seeing him.

Though the pope’s words were not captured in the Vatican’s video release, Vance acknowledged, “I know you’ve not been feeling great, but it’s good see you in better health.” The exchange saw the help of a priest translating for the pope. During this interaction, Vance received Easter-themed gifts, including chocolate eggs for his children, rosaries, and a Vatican tie, which he gratefully admired, calling it “So beautiful.” Commemorating the moment, they posed for a photograph, with Vance standing by the pope’s side, and he expressed his commitment to keep the pope in his daily prayers, “God bless you.”

The visit was accompanied by political nuances, as Vance discussed various issues with Cardinal Pietro Parolin on Saturday. The Vatican described their conversation as “an exchange of opinions.” Under Pope Francis, the Catholic Church has been a vocal advocate for migrant rights, while Vance and former President Donald Trump have supported stricter measures. Vance’s office mentioned their discussions on shared religious beliefs, challenges facing persecuted Christian communities, and President Trump’s dedication to global peace efforts.

Following the pope’s death, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared Vance’s team’s reflections from their meeting the previous day, praising the late pope for influencing millions during his leadership. “They expressed how excited and grateful they were for the opportunity to have met with the pope just yesterday,” she said. Leavitt further commented on the solemnity felt by Catholics worldwide and extended prayers to those mourning the pope’s passing.

Former President Trump paid his respects via a statement on Truth Social, “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!” Additionally, during the White House Easter Egg Roll event, Trump announced an executive order for U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff in tribute to the pope, describing him as a man who loved the world.

Continuing his travels to India after his time in Italy, Vance shared heartfelt messages on social media, acknowledging the news of Pope Francis’ demise. He expressed condolences to the Christian communities deeply touched by the pope’s legacy. Posting on X, he reflected on their recent meeting and specific homilies from the pope’s time addressing the early challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, delivered from St. Peter’s Basilica in March 2020. Vance highlighted the pope’s words that painted a picture of an enveloping darkness yet encouraged reliance on faith for spiritual endurance, affirming, “because with God, life never dies.”
