MINNEAPOLIS — Legal documents filed on Tuesday reveal that a man apprehended outside UnitedHealthcare’s corporate offices had a history marked by mental health issues and threatening behavior toward corporate locations. At 26 years old, the individual faced charges in Hennepin County District Court for two counts related to illegal firearm possession and two counts of threatening violence. Notably, his record already included a felony conviction for making violent threats, which barred him from owning firearms and ammunition. He also had ongoing legal issues involving restraining order violations.

According to the case details, the defendant made a call to the FBI on Monday morning from a parking area of the Minneapolis suburb of Minnetonka. He disclosed his presence in a vehicle there, specifying that he was armed with a loaded gun.

The complaint highlights the police awareness of the man’s history, mentioning his psychological struggles and previous patterns of offensive behavior. When officers reached the scene, they found him seated in his car. An FBI negotiator established communication, which concluded with the man’s peaceful surrender in less than an hour. Within the vehicle, authorities recovered a revolver and ammunition.

Further inquiry discovered that the defendant had contacted emergency services earlier, warning that he planned to shoot into UnitedHealthcare’s building unless charges against him were annulled. The complaint cited his remarks, which implied threats significant enough to trigger an emergency evacuation broadcast.

Law enforcement and corporate leaders clarified on Monday that there didn’t seem to be any personal vendetta the man held against UnitedHealthcare. However, security measures were heightened at the corporate site following the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was tragically killed in New York City on December 4.
