BOSTON — The Chicago White Sox broke free from a six-game losing spell on Sunday by defeating the Boston Red Sox 8-4, marking an end to the team’s most challenging start on the road in its history. The game showcased a remarkable performance by Andrew Vaughn, who launched a two-run homer. Edgar Quero, stepping in as a pinch-hitter, further contributed with a pivotal two-run single that put Chicago ahead.

Matt Thaiss also made an impact with his own two-run homer, propelling the White Sox forward after having started the season with losses in their initial eight away games. On the other side, the Red Sox had their four-game winning spree snapped, despite an attempt to shift momentum by Wilyer Abreu’s three-run homer.

In the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Brooks Baldwin successfully executed a run-scoring safety squeeze, narrowing the gap to 4-3. Then, Quero came through with a timely single straight down the middle, giving Chicago a crucial lead.

The Red Sox, who suffered a historically poor start with Tanner Houck conceding 12 runs in just over two innings against Tampa Bay last Monday, saw a slightly improved but still shaky performance from Houck. He allowed Thaiss’ wind-assisted home run in the first inning but held the White Sox scoreless over the subsequent five innings.

Chicago saw Brandon Eisert secure his first major league win by retiring five batters. Conversely, Red Sox reliever Zack Kelly struggled, giving up three runs without managing to retire a single batter. Abreu’s powerful hit into the White Sox bullpen off Sean Burke initially put Boston on the board at 3-2 during the first inning.

While the 25-year-old Massachusetts native, Burke, allowed a total of four runs—only one of which was earned—across his five-inning stint, the contest was notably significant for Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks. He entered a major league game for the first time since June 2023, where unfortunately, Vaughn capitalized with a two-run homer in the eighth inning.

Tanner Houck managed to reduce his ERA from an alarming 9.16 over his first four starts to a slightly more respectable 7.66. Looking ahead, the White Sox’s Jonathan Cannon (0-2, 4.42 ERA) is scheduled to oppose the Red Sox’s Walker Buehler (2-1, 5.23 ERA) in the Patriots’ Day game on Monday morning, with first pitch set for 11:10 a.m. in Boston.
