In Roseburg, Oregon, a heartbreaking accident involving a college softball team occurred, resulting in the tragic loss of both an athlete and their coach. On Friday night, as the Umpqua Community College team traveled back from a game, their bus was intercepted by a pickup truck that veered across the center line and collided head-on with their vehicle in Coos County, explained the Oregon State Police.
Driving the Chevrolet Express bus was Jami Strinz, aged 46, known for her role as the head softball coach as highlighted on the college’s website. Sadly, she was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Meanwhile, Kiley Jones, a 19-year-old freshman hailing from Nampa, Idaho, and playing first base for the team, lost her life at the scene, as shared on the athletics department’s site.
The incident has shocked the Umpqua Community College community. President Rachel Pokrandt remarked in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our student-athletes, Kiley Jones, and one of our coaches, Jami Strinz, lost their lives in the accident.” She described them as “cherished members of our campus — an exceptional student-athlete, and a passionate and talented coach.” The president expressed the profound sense of loss felt across the community and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, teammates, and loved ones.
According to police, the remaining eight individuals on the bus sustained “moderate to serious injuries.” They were promptly provided with emergency medical attention, and some remained hospitalized in Eugene and Portland as of Saturday. Additionally, the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado truck incurred serious injuries and was taken to a medical center for urgent care.
Authorities suspect that impaired driving played a significant role in the crash, and a criminal investigation is currently underway. The incident has prompted reactions from various quarters, including from Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, who expressed her sorrow on social media, stating that her “heart aches” for the school family affected by the tragedy. She also conveyed the state’s support during this period of grief and loss.
