SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Tragedy struck Missouri State University as 21-year-old safety Todric McGee died early Saturday, following what authorities suggest might have been an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are thoroughly investigating the incident.
According to the Springfield Police Department, officers arrived at McGee’s residence on Friday morning after a wellness check was requested. Upon arrival, they found McGee severely injured, prompting an immediate transport to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later.
The university confirmed McGee’s passing on Saturday, stating that the injuries leading to his death occurred at home a day prior. As he was about to embark on his fifth season with the team, McGee was poised as the starting safety for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He had earned all-conference honors the previous year, marking him as a key player for the Bears.
Ryan Beard, the head coach of the Missouri State football team, expressed profound sorrow at McGee’s untimely death. “Our football family is in shock and mourning,” Beard stated, urging for privacy on behalf of McGee’s family and teammates. He also invited everyone to keep McGee and those who cherished him in their thoughts and prayers.
McGee’s roots trace back to Wichita, Kansas, where he graduated from Wichita Northwest High School before rising as a notable athlete at Missouri State. His unexpected death has left a significant void in both the university and his hometown community.
