In Royal Oak, Michigan, springtime brought an unconventional spectacle to the locals. With the sun shining, a few clouds dotting the sky, and the unmistakable sound of helicopter blades cutting through the air, a delightful event unfolded at Worden Park. Hovering above the verdant expanse, a helicopter distributed sacks filled with marshmallows to an eager crowd of children below.

The young participants, some sporting vibrant baskets and rabbit ears, watched in awe as the aircraft buzzed overhead on its approach to the designated drop zone. To maintain safety and order, volunteers donned in bright yellow vests ensured that the children refrained from diving in for the treat until the marshmallow downpour concluded.

However, concerns regarding food hygiene could be set aside, as the marshmallows weren’t for eating. Instead, children could exchange their sweet finds for a prize package, which included exciting rewards like a water park pass and a kite. This whimsical tradition, known as the Great Marshmallow Drop, has been a beloved event in Royal Oak for more than 30 years, organized by Oakland County Parks.

For Georgia Mason, a young attendee experiencing her inaugural marshmallow drop, it was a thrilling adventure. Her father, Matt, recounted the day’s highlights. “The helicopters were probably the most exciting part. But when the marshmallows started to fall, we were really excited,” he said, adding, “We joined the fun, and picking up a marshmallow wasn’t too tricky.”

A staggering 15,000 marshmallows were scattered from the skies over the course of the event. The helicopter made multiple passes, targeting different age groups: children four years old and under, those aged five to seven, and another batch for eight to 12-year-olds. Additionally, a special marshmallow drop for children with disabilities was held later in the day.

Melissa Nawrocki, the Oakland County recreation program supervisor, emphasized the event’s value for engaging the community. “We do it because it enhances community involvement,” she noted. “The children absolutely love it. Seeing the joy on their faces as they collect their marshmallows and exchange them for prizes is truly wonderful.”
