TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University has halted all home sports activities this weekend following a tragic campus shooting on Thursday that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least six others.
The victims who died were not university students, while the suspected shooter is believed to have been a student at the institution, according to Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower. The shooter was identified as the son of a sheriff’s deputy, and the firearm used was reportedly a former service weapon.
An alert was issued by the university around noon ET warning of an active shooter situation near the student union and advising those on campus to seek shelter immediately. In response to the incident, the university canceled classes through Friday and called off all athletic events until Sunday.
The cancellation includes the final spring football practices and a baseball series originally scheduled against Virginia. Additional events affected include a softball series against Georgia Tech. Despite these cancellations, the Seminoles’ women’s golf team continues to participate in the ACC Tournament held in North Carolina. The women’s track team is currently competing in the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, while the men’s tennis team adhered to their original schedule, playing a match on Thursday night in Louisville.
