LONDON — Universal Studios has announced plans to construct its inaugural theme park and resort in Europe, selecting the United Kingdom as its chosen location. The company, which is well-known for drawing in crowds to its existing attractions, such as those inspired by the Harry Potter series, disclosed these plans alongside notable UK officials on Wednesday.
Set to commence construction next year, the park will be situated just outside London, offering a new leisure destination for both locals and tourists. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the significant economic benefits of the project, stating that the development will generate around 28,000 jobs, fostering growth and prosperity in the region while bringing joy to many.
Starmer humorously remarked, “I’ve been told that government is like a roller-coaster, and this endeavor is certainly in keeping with that,” as he spoke about the benefits and excitement surrounding the park.
The ambitious development, which will cover 476 acres of land in what was once a brickyard near Bedford, is anticipated to be completed by 2031. This location lies approximately 50 miles north of London, offering ease of access for visitors.
While Universal has yet to announce the specific attractions planned for the park, its resume includes thrilling rides based on popular movie franchises such as “Minions,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Jurassic Park,” “Kung Fu Panda,” and “Fast & Furious.” Their collaboration with Warner Bros. has also allowed them to integrate Harry Potter-themed attractions into their existing parks, a lucrative venture considering the series’ setting in Scotland.
Curiously located about 30 miles north of Warner Bros.’ Studio Tour in Watford, the new Universal resort promises easy access, residing next to a major railway line and benefiting from recent and planned expansions at Luton Airport.
This project marks a significant expansion for Universal, a division of Comcast Corp., which currently operates five entertainment and resort complexes across the globe, from Orlando, Florida, to Singapore. Through this upcoming venture in the UK, Universal aims to extend its legacy of extraordinary entertainment to a new audience.
