LISBON, Portugal — Aurélio Pereira, who played a pivotal role in unearthing football talents like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo, has passed away at the age of 77, Sporting Lisbon announced on Tuesday.
The cause of death for Pereira, who had made significant contributions to the club as a former player and coach, was not disclosed.
Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to Pereira, acknowledging him as “one of the greatest symbols” in nurturing young talent on a global scale. Ronaldo expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and for so many other players. Thank you for everything … Rest in peace.”
Sporting Lisbon celebrated Pereira’s legacy, highlighting his role in discovering 10 players who later represented Portugal at the 2016 European Championship in France, a tournament they ultimately won.
Pereira was dedicated to fostering new talent as part of Sporting’s youth squads, a commitment he maintained for two decades.
