LYON, France — Lyon’s aspirations for securing a spot in the Champions League have suffered a significant setback following the revelation that Ernest Nuamah will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a severe knee injury.
The seven-time champions of France announced on Monday that the Ghanaian winger sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Lyon’s recent 2-1 victory over Lille in the French league over the weekend.
With only six matches remaining in the season, Lyon currently occupies the fifth position in the league standings, trailing third-placed Monaco by a mere two points. The top three teams in the league are granted qualification for the Champions League group stage.
Lyon is already contending with the absence of another winger, Malick Fofana, who is recovering from his own injury. As a result, the team will need to devise a new attacking strategy until the Belgian player is fit to return to the lineup.
Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain has maintained its unbeaten streak, officially claiming a record-extending 13th title following a narrow 1-0 triumph over Angers on Saturday.
