MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended warm congratulations to Alex Ovechkin following his achievement as the NHL’s leading goal-scorer of all time. Ovechkin set the remarkable record with his 895th career goal, surpassing the iconic Wayne Gretzky. The milestone came during the Washington Capitals’ match against the New York Islanders on Sunday.

In his message, released by the Kremlin on Monday, Putin applauded Ovechkin for surpassing legendary figures in the NHL with his goal-scoring prowess. He emphasized that this was not only a personal triumph for Ovechkin but also a celebratory moment for hockey fans in Russia and around the world. Putin expressed his wishes for Ovechkin’s continued health, success, and resilience in both his athletic and personal endeavors.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that although Putin has not yet had a phone conversation with Ovechkin, the congratulatory message is indicative of the high regard the president holds for Ovechkin’s sporting achievements.

Ovechkin has been known for his support of Putin in the past. In 2017, he formed a group on social media named Putin Team to showcase his backing for the Russian president, who secured re-election the following year. At the time, Ovechkin commented to news outlets that his support was rooted in his patriotism and not political motivations.

Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryev also commended Ovechkin following his record-breaking performance. On social media, Degtyaryev remarked that Ovechkin remains a pivotal member of the Putin Team while also being a prominent figure in international hockey, cherished by millions as the leading scorer in the NHL.
