PITTSBURGH — When New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells thinks about breakfast, burritos are at the forefront of his mind. His passion for these delicious morning treats has led him to create an Instagram page dedicated exclusively to rating breakfast burritos from each visiting team’s clubhouse.
By Sunday afternoon, his Instagram had already garnered over 53,000 followers, a testament to the appeal of his unique project. During the Yankees’ initial away series, they faced the Pittsburgh Pirates, concluding the three-game series on Sunday. Wells took the opportunity to commend Pirates visiting clubhouse manager Kevin Conrad and his team, complimenting their burritos.
To distinguish his ranking system, Wells evaluates the burritos on a scale of 1-100, offering an alternative to the more common 1-10 scale. The Pirates’ burritos earned a score of 73. “I feel like everyone uses one out of 10, but I didn’t want to be like anybody else,” Wells explained with a grin before Sunday’s game. “I wanted to be different.”
As for what makes a breakfast burrito exceptional, Wells shared his preference, saying, “I really love a chorizo burrito. A little crisp on the tortilla and just a lot of eggs. So, kind of simple with a good flavor.”
