CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A thrilling finish saw Charlotte FC secure a 2-1 comeback triumph over Nashville SC at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of a late penalty by Wilfried Zaha and a stoppage-time strike from Idan Toklomati.
Wilfried Zaha netted a crucial equalizer for Charlotte FC (4-2-1) by converting a penalty kick in the 85th minute. The newcomer, making his sixth appearance this season, was awarded the chance from the spot after being fouled by Nashville’s Andy Najar. This goal marked Zaha’s second since joining the team.
Idan Toklomati clinched the victory by scoring in the 90th minute with help from Pep Biel, who notched his league-leading fifth assist of the campaign. The 20-year-old striker came off the bench in the 76th minute and marked his first career goal in what has been a promising start to his season. Toklomati has made seven appearances this season, including one start, compared to his sole appearance last year.
Charlotte’s goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina, celebrated for his prowess, showcased his skills with six saves throughout the match. He was particularly active in the opening 23 minutes, denying attempts from Nashville’s Gastón Brugman, Ahmed Qasem, and Andy Najar.
Nashville SC (3-3-1) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Hany Mukhtar scored off a pass from Daniel Lovitz. This goal was Mukhtar’s second this season and the 68th of his career—all with Nashville. In 2022, the accomplished 30-year-old topped the league charts with 23 goals. Daniel Lovitz added another assist, his third this season, bringing his career tally to 32 in 271 appearances.
In defense for Nashville, Joe Willis managed to save two shots throughout the encounter.
Charlotte FC remains the only team to have won their opening three matches of the season and extends its winning streak at home to eight games, continuing from the previous year.
Looking ahead, Nashville SC is set to face off against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, while Charlotte FC will travel to compete against CF Montreal the same day.
