Wrexham, Wales – Wrexham seems to be on the brink of securing its third consecutive promotion, edging closer to joining the second-tier Championship.
The team, cheered by celebrity co-owner Ryan Reynolds at the Racecourse Ground, claimed a decisive 3-0 victory over Burton Albion on Saturday. The win was sealed with three quick goals scored within a 16-minute period during the second half. This result was especially crucial for Wrexham, as third-placed Wycombe fell to a 1-0 defeat against Reading in a concurrent match.
Rob McElhenney, Wrexham’s additional U.S-based co-owner, expressed his enthusiasm, tweeting his delight: “So, so worth getting up early today.” These outcomes have left Wrexham six points ahead of Wycombe, although Wycombe has a game in hand. Currently, only the top two teams earn automatic promotion to the Championship, and it appears Birmingham, leading by eight points, and Wrexham are the frontrunners for these spots.
With five matches remaining in the season, Wrexham is determined to achieve their ambition of yet another promotion. Just two years prior, the team was competing in the fifth-tier National League. The rapid ascent through the English football ranks has largely been driven by the significant financial investment from its celebrity owners. Additionally, despite being a pivotal player in previous promotions, Paul Mullin was not included in the squad by manager Phil Parkinson for the recent match.
