In Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, a large number of citizens gathered on Friday to voice their opposition to President Faustin Archange Touadera’s intentions to run for a third term, supported by Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group.
This demonstration, spearheaded by opposition parties, reflects their strong objection to Touadera’s extended political ambitions.
The Wagner group, a well-known Russian paramilitary organization, has maintained a significant presence in the country, initially pledging to combat insurgent factions and stabilize the nation. Additionally, members of this mercenary group have been providing personal security to President Touadera, further assisting in his success during the constitutional referendum held in July 2023, which paved the way for his potential indefinite rule.
One opposition figure, Justin Winè, expressed the protesters’ concerns: “We’re here to say no to a third term for Faustin Archange Touadera. More than that, we want to protect our sovereignty, which Touadera and the Wagner have trampled upon.”
He also condemned the alleged crimes committed by the Wagner mercenaries, stating, “The Wagner have raped and killed without any justice. This is not normal. To put an end to their reign, Touadera must go.”
Since 2013, the Central African Republic has been embroiled in conflicts, originating when predominantly Muslim rebel groups usurped President François Bozizé. Although a peace agreement was forged with 14 armed factions in 2019, six of those groups have subsequently exited the accord.
Locals and authorities have acknowledged Wagner forces for their role in preventing rebel attacks on Bangui in 2021.
Martin Ziguélé, an opposition spokesman, applauded the country’s youth for their massive turnout at the protest, commending their efforts in defending the nation’s constitution.
