LONDON — British comedian Russell Brand has been formally charged with rape and sexual assault after a thorough 18-month investigation instigated by accusations from four women.
These individuals claimed they had been victims of assault at the hands of the controversial entertainer.
London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that the 50-year-old comedian faces multiple charges, including rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and several counts of sexual assault.
Brand has consistently denied any allegations of engaging in non-consensual sexual activities.

The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.
According to police, one of the reported cases took place in Bournemouth, a popular coastal town in England, while the remaining incidents occurred in the Westminster area in central London.
The investigation remains active, with authorities encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

In September 2023, British media channels, including Channel 4 and the Sunday Times, released reports from four women accusing Brand of sexual misconduct.
While the identities of these women remain undisclosed, their allegations have brought significant attention to the case.
Brand, who is known for his eccentric and bold comedic style, has been questioned by police regarding the allegations, all of which he ardently denies.

In a video released on X, a platform where he maintains a strong presence, Brand reiterated his innocence, stating, “I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity.
I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”
He expressed his gratitude for the chance to defend himself in court, emphasizing his eagerness to clear his name.

Russell Brand, who shot to fame through his stand-up comedy and appearances in films like “Get Him To The Greek,” also had a stint in radio and television.
He has authored memoirs detailing his battles with substance abuse and was once married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012.
While his presence in mainstream media has waned over the years, Brand has garnered a significant online following, known for sharing content that often combines wellness tips with conspiracy theories.

He’s currently residing in the United States but is scheduled to appear in a London court on May 2.
Jaswant Narwal from Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service stated that the decision to charge Brand followed a comprehensive review of evidence collected after a Channel 4 documentary aired in September 2023.
The charges include rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault.

Narwal emphasized the importance of a fair trial, reminding the public that criminal proceedings are now active.
In addition, in January, the BBC issued an apology to staff members who previously felt deterred from speaking out against Brand’s behavior due to his celebrity status.
Brand had hosted radio shows with the network from 2006 to 2008.
The BBC acknowledged past instances of misuse of power by presenters, underlining the need for systemic changes.
