In an emotional announcement, Kevin De Bruyne revealed plans to leave Manchester City, a decision that marks the end of a decade rich in silverware with the club. At 33 years old, the Belgian maestro is out of contract by summer and shared via social media on Friday that these are his “final months” with the reigning Premier League champions.
De Bruyne expressed, “Writing this isn’t easy, but as footballers, we know this day comes sooner or later. That day has arrived.” Over his tenure, De Bruyne established himself as one of the Premier League’s legendary figures, contributing to Manchester City’s victory in 16 major competitions during an era of unmatched success.
Arriving from Wolfsburg in 2015 for approximately $71 million, De Bruyne has clinched every significant club accolade, most notably the highly esteemed Champions League title. “This city, this club, these people gave me everything, leaving me no choice but to give everything back,” he reminisced. “And guess what? We won everything. Despite our wishes, it’s time to bid farewell.”
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, described De Bruyne’s impending departure as a “sad day.” He remarked, “In the Premier League, Kevin is one of the finest midfielders to ever grace the pitch in this country, indisputably for our club. His assists, goals, and vision—especially in the final third—are challenging to replace.”
Accruing 118 assists, De Bruyne ranks second only to Ryan Giggs from Manchester United, who holds the record with 162 assists. De Bruyne achieved this feat in 280 appearances, while Giggs required 632. Across all competitions, De Bruyne has played 413 matches for City, scored 106 goals, and was twice honored as the PFA Player of the Year in England.
Though he made his mark with City, De Bruyne had initially been part of Chelsea after a move from Genk, Belgium, in 2012.
