LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers have had to sideline their standout first baseman, Freddie Freeman, after an unexpected accident at home. Freeman was added to the 10-day injured list due to a sprain in his right ankle, which had previously undergone surgery. The mishap occurred in the shower on Sunday, a rest day for the team following their triumphant World Series win. Freeman has participated in only three games this season following his absence in the opening series in Tokyo against the Chicago Cubs due to rib discomfort. He also did not participate in the recent series against his former team, the Atlanta Braves.
The Dodgers are off to a stellar start with an 8-0 record and are set to embark on a six-game road trip starting in Philadelphia on Friday. Reflecting on the incident, Freeman humorously recounted how his wife, Chelsea, jested about the situation, imagining she would be dealing with such mishaps in his later years rather than now. Their young son, Brandon, contributed to the lighthearted mood by commenting on his father’s misfortune.
Previously, Freeman had injured the same ankle during a September game, which impeded his performance in the early postseason rounds. Nevertheless, he excelled during the World Series, hitting home runs in four consecutive games and securing 12 RBIs, playing a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ victory over the New York Yankees in five games. Due to lingering issues, he underwent surgery in December to clean up the joint.
Despite the recent setback, Freeman remains dedicated to his recovery, as demonstrated by his commitment to a rigorous treatment session. After being driven to Dodger Stadium by Chelsea, he was eventually able to drive himself home, with X-rays confirming no significant damage to the injured ankle.
This season, Freeman has a batting record of 3 for 12, including two home runs, in the few games he has played. His illustrious career includes eight All-Star appearances and being named the National League MVP while playing for Atlanta in 2020.
