LONDON — Plans are underway for a transformation of the popular hill near No. 1 Court at Wimbledon, just in time for the prestigious tournament’s 150th anniversary.

This grassy hill has become iconic at Wimbledon’s All England Club, serving as a gathering spot for countless fans who lack tickets to the main courts. Here, spectators can enjoy matches broadcasted on a massive screen. Throughout the years, British players’ achievements have lent the area creative nicknames such as “Henman Hill” and “Murray Mound.”

The club announced its intention to commence enhancement works following the next year’s event. The redesigned hill is expected to be ready by 2027, coinciding with Wimbledon’s sesquicentennial celebrations.

A consultation with the local community is on the agenda for next week before the submission of the planning application, the club stated.

The renovation is designed to enhance wheelchair accessibility, increase seating options, and improve sightlines. “These upgrades will accommodate a 20% increase in capacity, allowing more guests to engage with the area,” the club noted. The improvements will include the removal of existing pathways, replacing them with more eco-friendly walkways, along with the addition of a pergola for shade and rain protection.

Originally dubbed Henman Hill in recognition of Tim Henman’s four semifinal appearances, the moniker later changed to Murray Mound in honor of Andy Murray’s triumph in 2013, which ended a 77-year drought for British men in the tournament.
