ESTAVAYER-LE-LAC, Switzerland โ Remco Evenepoel, a decorated two-time Olympic champion, is anticipated to make his return to competitive cycling this month following a serious accident he suffered last year, according to Tour de Romandie organizers.
The Belgian cyclist endured multiple injuries including fractures, a dislocated collarbone, and lung contusions in December after colliding with a vehicle during a training session in Belgium.
Tour de Romandie organizers expressed excitement over his expected return, stating, โFrom the first lists of entries received by the race organization, one name has already emerged that is sure to thrill the public: The prodigious Remco Evenepoel.โ
Despite the anticipation, Evenepoelโs team, Soudal Quick-Step, has not yet confirmed his participation, leaving uncertainty over whether he will compete before the Tour de Romandie, scheduled to take place in Switzerland from April 29 to May 4.
The accident occurred on December 3 when Evenepoel collided with an open door of a Post Office van, causing significant impact that shattered his bicycle frame. He has since undergone successful surgery.
Evenepoel has set his sights on the Tour de France in July as the main objective of his season. Last year, he achieved third place in this prestigious cycling event and went on to make history as the first cyclist to win both the road race and time trial at an Olympic Games, which took place in Paris in August.
In addition to his Olympic triumphs, Evenepoel is a two-time world champion, having also claimed victory at the Spanish Vuelta in 2022.
