In Los Angeles, Xavier Becerra, once the Health Secretary under the Biden administration, has officially entered the race to become the next governor of California. As a Democrat, Becerra joins a host of contenders vying for the governorship, a competition that could become even more competitive should former Vice President Kamala Harris throw her hat into the ring.
Becerra boasts an extensive background in public service, having served as California’s attorney general, a U.S. House representative, and a state legislator. His appointment as the Health Secretary by then-President-elect Joe Biden in December 2020 placed him at the helm of the Department of Health and Human Services during the administration’s efforts to manage the coronavirus pandemic. Becerra, a staunch advocate of the Affordable Care Act, was selected to spearhead these efforts.
In a state heavily dominated by Democrats but facing challenges like soaring living costs, Becerra expressed concern over the economic struggles faced by working families. “The California Dream is slipping away,” he remarked in his candidacy announcement.
The race to succeed the term-limited Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, has already attracted numerous candidates. This dynamic could shift significantly if Harris decides to campaign for the governorship. Though she has not yet made her intentions clear since her departure from Washington following her unsuccessful presidential campaign, the possibility remains open.
Democrats are favored to retain the position in California, where their voter registration significantly surpasses that of Republicans, who have not secured a statewide victory in nearly 20 years.
Without singling out any rivals, Becerra’s statement acknowledged his Democratic competitors, such as former U.S. House member Katie Porter, previous Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.
From the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is one of the key challengers, having announced his gubernatorial bid earlier this year. He has been critical of Democrats for the persistent homelessness crisis and escalating housing costs.
Becerra, known for his composed demeanor, emphasized his preparedness to confront obstacles, referencing his past adversarial relationship with President Donald Trump. During his tenure as California attorney general, Becerra frequently engaged in legal battles with the Trump administration over issues ranging from healthcare to environmental regulations.
While leading the nation’s health agency, Becerra witnessed California’s stringent lockdowns during the pandemic—a subject debated for its impact on education and the economy, potentially exposing him to conservative criticism.
Becerra often draws inspiration from his family’s humble beginnings. His mother hailed from Jalisco, Mexico, and joined his father, originally from Sacramento, California, who had his roots in Mexico. “My parents came to California with $12 in their pockets. They built a life they were proud of,” Becerra stated. “That’s the promise of California, and I will fight to ensure it’s still within reach for everyone.”
