LAS VEGAS — The box office projections for 2025 appear bleak, but could the much-anticipated “summer of ‘Superman’” turn things around? Warner Bros. recently unveiled a star-studded lineup of upcoming films, with the spotlight firmly on the iconic Superman.
During the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, filmmaker James Gunn expressed his enthusiasm for the movie, emphasizing its focus on human kindness in a time where it’s seemingly diminishing. “This film celebrates kindness and human love,” he shared. As the first director of a new phase for the DC Universe, Gunn brought together the film’s stars, who eagerly shared their experiences.
David Corenswet, stepping into the legendary role of Clark Kent, spoke about the importance and awareness surrounding the Superman symbol. He expressed his hope to bring new insights to the character while reaching a fresh audience. “It’s a profound honor to embody such a universally recognized role,” he noted.
Joining him on stage were Rachel Brosnahan, portraying Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult in the role of the notorious Lex Luthor. Brosnahan highlighted Gunn’s ability to create a cohesive and passionate environment on set, which she described as a uniquely joyful experience.
Following Gunn’s appointment as director in 2023, after he and Peter Safran took leadership roles at DC Studios, they’ve been instrumental in shaping the studio’s vision moving forward. Safran commended theater owners, reiterating the importance of cinema as a driving force behind their ambitious plans and their commitment to advancing film-making techniques.
The upcoming Superman film is slated for a theatrical release in July, arriving amidst a season rich with superhero offerings, such as “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Thunderbolts.”
In addition to highlighting Superman, Warner Bros. also teased some of its April releases, including Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie,” while offering a glimpse into its future productions for 2025.
The studio started its presentation with a nod to film enthusiasts by featuring stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Regina Hall from Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, “One Battle After Another,” which is scheduled to hit theaters in September. DiCaprio expressed his long-standing desire to work with Anderson, praising the director’s unique talent and ambitious scope in this politically and culturally resonant epic.
Additionally, director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer provided attendees with an exclusive look at “F1,” a Formula One racing drama starring Brad Pitt, set for a June debut.
Beyond the glitz and glamour, CinemaCon serves as a platform for industry stakeholders to address pressing issues, such as theatrical window strategies and the burgeoning intersection between traditional studios and streaming services.
