LOS ANGELES — Jesse Chavez and the Atlanta Braves have reunited yet again. The seasoned right-hander’s contract was purchased by the Braves from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. This marks his fifth stint with the team since 2021 and sixth overall.
The 41-year-old pitcher first became part of the Braves roster in December 2009, coming from a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays exchanging reliever Rafael Soriano. His journey with the Braves took a pivotal turn in 2021 when he signed a minor league deal that eventually saw him contribute to their World Series win.
Throughout his extensive career, Chavez has donned the uniforms of nine different teams. His journey includes multiple stints with teams such as Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels, Texas, and the Chicago Cubs.
Braves manager Brian Snitker expressed enthusiasm about Chavez’s return, emphasizing the positivity he brings to the team. “We need as much positive as we can have right now, and Jesse definitely brings that,” he said. “He’s part of the family, and it’s always good when you see Jesse walk through that door.”
The reunion occurred on a somber day when the Braves faced additional challenges with the suspension of outfielder Jurickson Profar by Major League Baseball. Profar was handed an 80-game suspension due to a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug.
During Monday night’s game against the unbeaten Los Angeles Dodgers, Chavez pitched two innings in relief for the Braves. He allowed one run and two hits, striking out one, walking two, and giving up a homer to Kiké Hernández in the sixth inning. However, this effort wasn’t enough to prevent the 6-1 loss, leaving the Braves winless at 0-5—their worst start since 2016 when they opened with a 0-9 record.
Chavez’s track record with the Braves showcases his reliability, having maintained a 2.53 ERA across 158 appearances for the team since 2021.
In other roster moves on Monday, the Braves designated right-hander Héctor Neris for assignment.
