PALM BEACH, Fla.—Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin has been in steady communication with Aaron Rodgers, while expressing confidence in Mason Rudolph’s ability to lead the team as the starting quarterback in the upcoming season.
“That’s why we brought him back,” Tomlin explained during the league’s annual meetings on Monday, reassuring the decision to rely on Rudolph. “I’m comfortable with that. And we’ve been there before.” Rudolph, who had a 3-1 record as a starter for the Steelers in 2023, faced a defeat only in a wild-card game against Buffalo. Despite a change in offensive coordinators since Rudolph last took the field, Tomlin remains assured of his abilities. He remarked, “Mason is not a kid. He’s been around, been in multiple systems and situations.”
Tomlin has maintained open lines of communication with Aaron Rodgers through various means. When asked whether he communicates with the four-time NFL MVP by calling, texting, or FaceTiming, Tomlin responded, “All of the above.” Rodgers, who recently became a free agent, spent a productive day in Pittsburgh the previous Friday, as Tomlin mentioned. The meeting provided an opportunity for both to engage in discussions beyond the competitive field, though Tomlin has not specified further developments regarding potential agreements.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the quarterback position, Tomlin expressed no discomfort. “I’m really comfortable with being unstuck at this time of year, to be quite honest with you,” he stated. The Steelers saw Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leave through free agency while bringing back Rudolph, aiming to end a playoff drought dating back to their AFC title game appearance after the 2016 season. With the 21st overall pick in next month’s draft, Pittsburgh has the flexibility to explore new prospects, including Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart, regardless of Rodgers’ decision.
Tomlin noted the talent within the upcoming draft class, mentioning players like Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. “It doesn’t appear to be devoid of talent,” he said. He expressed optimism about the potential recruits, praising their qualities both on and off the field. Although Rodgers remains a free agent for the first time in his 20-year career, his options are open to joining the Steelers, waiting on Minnesota Vikings’ interest, or contemplating retirement.
The Vikings themselves seem prepared to move forward with J.J. McCarthy, leaving Tomlin without a deadline for Rodgers’ decision. “There is no drop-dead date specifically in my mind, no,” Tomlin concluded, emphasizing a patient approach.
