In Honolulu, authorities have detailed a harrowing incident where a doctor from Maui is accused of attacking his wife during a hike. Reports revealed that Gerhardt Konig allegedly pushed his wife off a hiking path, striking her head with a rock approximately ten times, and attempted to administer two syringes on her.

Konig now faces an attempted murder charge, prompting the court to set his bail at $5 million. A preliminary hearing is expected to take place next week. Attempts to reach his attorney for comment have been unsuccessful so far.

The court documents allege that the altercation began on Monday while the couple was hiking along the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu. Konig reportedly suggested taking a selfie near the cliff edge, a spot known for its breathtaking ocean and mountain vistas. However, his wife felt uneasy about the proximity to the edge and decided to walk away.

As she turned back, Konig allegedly shouted for her to return. When she hesitated, he reportedly pushed her into the bushes, leading to a physical struggle. During this confrontation, his wife claims to have escaped his grasp.

The documents describe how Konig picked up a rock and hit his wife’s head nearly ten times, also allegedly pulling her hair and forcing her face into the ground. Desperate for assistance, she managed to reach two fellow hikers who intervened by calling 911.

In her statement to the police, the wife mentioned seeing Konig take syringes from his bag and attempt to use them on her, but she successfully thwarted this attempt. Following the incident, she was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, including significant cuts to her face and head, but she remains in stable condition.

The aftermath saw Konig flee the scene, which initiated an extensive search operation and led to the temporary closure of a state park. Police eventually apprehended him later that evening after a brief pursuit.

Konig, who works as an anesthesiologist affiliated with Maui Health, has been suspended as the investigation unfolds. Maui Health, which operates on behalf of Kaiser Permanente, confirmed Konig’s suspension in a media statement. His profile has been removed from their online directory.

Kaiser Permanente clarified that while Konig’s medical services were contracted through an independent organization, he is not a direct employee of theirs. His credentials and ability to provide patient care have been suspended as authorities continue their investigation into the matter.
