SEATTLE – Shea Langeliers delivered a decisive two-run homer, while Osvaldo Bido offered five innings of effective pitching to steer the Athletics to a 4-2 triumph over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday evening.
The Athletics saw additional offensive contributions through RBI singles from Miguel Andujar and Brent Rooker. Mason Miller capped off the game by notching three strikeouts in a flawless ninth inning, securing his first save of the season.
Langeliers gave the Athletics an edge with his first homer of the season, which he belted against Mariners starter Bryce Miller, who conceded three runs on six hits over his 5 2/3 innings.
Osvaldo Bido recorded his first victory, giving up three hits and two runs—one of which was unearned—while issuing four walks and striking out four.
Seattle managed to score first with Rowdy Tellez crossing home plate due to a throwing mishap by Langeliers in the second inning. The catcher’s errant throw to second during Ryan Bliss’ stolen base attempt went into center field, providing Tellez with an opportunity to score from third.
Langeliers shifted the momentum with his home run in the fourth inning, putting the Athletics in the lead. Following this, Andujar extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning with an RBI single off Bryce Miller.
Jorge Polanco’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth narrowed the deficit to one run. However, Athletic’s reliever Noah Murdock successfully ended the Mariners’ rally during his major league debut by securing the last two outs and leaving two Seattle runners on base. Murdock pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Brent Rooker added an additional insurance run for the Athletics with an RBI single in the seventh off reliever Collin Snider.
One of the key moments in the game was Andujar’s sixth-inning hit, which provided the Athletics with a vital buffer.
Notably, Seattle struggled offensively, going 1-10 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base throughout the game. The Mariners also tallied 12 strikeouts, continuing a troubling trend as they have accumulated 32 strikeouts in the first three games of the season.
Looking ahead, left-hander JP Sears is slated to make his season debut for the Athletics on Sunday, facing off against Mariners’ right-hander Bryan Woo.
