SAN DIEGO — During Saturday’s contest against the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado exited after experiencing a cramp in his right calf. The incident occurred during a 1-0 win for the Padres, as Machado was at the plate in the fourth inning.
Machado encountered the cramp while attempting to hit a pitch delivered by Spencer Schwellenbach. He managed to foul off the pitch but visibly struggled as he tried to leave the batter’s box. After consulting with an athletic trainer, Machado concluded his at-bat by flying out to right field.
To ensure his wellbeing, Machado was substituted by Jose Iglesias at the beginning of the fifth inning.
Machado expressed optimism regarding his playing status for Sunday’s concluding game of the series. “I think Shildty made the right call, taking me out as a precaution to prevent any worsening,” Machado stated, mentioning manager Mike Shildt. “It’s just a muscle cramp, something familiar. It’s not alarming at all.”
Manager Shildt elaborated, “He cramped up, and the cramp persisted. It was clear staying in the game wasn’t wise. Seeing him smile in the congratulatory line was reassuring.”
