WASHINGTON — In a remarkable display of skill, Diego Rossi netted two goals to help the Columbus Crew overcome D.C. United with a 2-1 victory on Saturday, maintaining their unbeaten streak in the new season.
Prior to the match, Columbus Crew (3-0-3) stood alongside Miami as the only teams left in the league without a loss.
The decisive goal came in the 65th minute when midfielder Max Arfsten positioned himself ahead of Rossi on the left flank. Rossi collected the pass and fired a shot from outside the box, leaving D.C. United’s goalkeeper Kim Joon-Hong powerless to prevent the goal.
Earlier in the 16th minute, Rossi had equalized the score at 1-1 with precision shooting from the right side. Finding the lower left corner of the net, his strike was supported by Andrés Herrera and Dylan Chambost’s assists.
The match began with D.C. United (1-2-3) taking an early lead. It was Christian Benteke who broke the deadlock in the 13th minute with a right-footed effort from the center of the box, thanks to João Peglow’s assist.
Benteke nearly added to his tally in the 55th minute when his shot struck the post and narrowly missed crossing the goal line.
With this defeat, D.C. United faces two consecutive losses.
