ROME — Venice will indeed play host to the nuptials of billionaire Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, as confirmed by the city authorities on Saturday. Dispelling widespread rumors, officials assured that the famed Italian locale would not be overwhelmed by throngs of celebrities nor experience disruptions affecting its residents and tourists.
A brief statement from the city did not specify a wedding date, though Italian media speculate it will occur between June 24-26, accompanied by several days of celebrations. “The circulating speculations and false news about Jeff Bezos’ wedding are completely unfounded,” the statement declared.
Bezos, known for founding Amazon and owning The Washington Post, will follow the footsteps of other celebrities such as George and Amal Clooney, who chose Venice for their 2014 wedding. While the reports initially suggested a sprawling guest list, city officials clarified only 200 attendees are expected—a manageable number that promises minimal interference with the city’s day-to-day activities.
Venice, boasting experience in large-scale events such as G20 and G7 summits, the Architecture and Cinema Biennales, and high-profile weddings, reassured that the event would not spell chaos. “Venice is accustomed to hosting events weekly without substantial impacts,” the city affirmed.
Recent media reports had alleged that wedding preparations were commandeering a significant portion of Venice’s luxurious hotel accommodations and securing numerous gondolas and water taxis, which are essential to daily transportation for locals and visitors. Responding to this, the city stressed its commitment to maintaining normalcy and avoiding undue disturbances.
“Our utmost priority is ensuring the city continues its usual functions without disruptions to anyone,” they stated. Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, added, “We are collaboratively working with organizers to keep the event mindful of the city’s fragile and unique character.”
