NEW YORK – The New York Liberty have officially confirmed the re-signing of basketball star Breanna Stewart, a pivotal figure in their championship-winning season last year. The announcement was made on Saturday, sealing the continuation of a promising partnership.
Stewart’s decision to stay with the Liberty comes as no surprise, given her significant role in securing the team’s first-ever WNBA title. Her career includes three league championships, with her first two triumphs occurring during her tenure with the Seattle Storm. Her impressive achievements include earning the WNBA MVP title twice and being named Finals MVP on two occasions.
“Re-signing Stewie was our foremost priority this offseason,” stated Jonathan Kolb, New York Liberty’s General Manager. “Her influence is profound both on and off the court. As one of the top players globally, her leadership and determination form the cornerstone of the high standards we are cultivating in New York.”
During her two years in New York, Stewart has averaged 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, showcasing her all-around ability with 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.
At 30, Stewart joined the Liberty in 2023 to be closer to her roots in Syracuse, New York. Previously, she spent seven seasons with the Seattle Storm, who drafted her first overall in 2016. Earlier this month, Stewart underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right meniscus but is anticipated to be back to full strength by the start of training camp next month.
Her offseason included participation in Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league she co-founded alongside Napheesa Collier. Despite averaging 19.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, her team did not make it to the playoffs.
Maintaining the momentum from last season’s championship run, the Liberty have retained their entire starting lineup. This includes the addition of Natasha Cloud through a trade, as they aim for another successful season after overcoming Minnesota in a thrilling five-game series.
