President Donald Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has set its sights on the Walt Disney Co. and its ABC network, initiating an investigation into whether they are endorsing discriminatory practices under the guise of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr revealed the inquiry through a letter addressed to Disney CEO Robert Iger. Disney has responded by stating that it is currently reviewing the letter and is prepared to address the commission’s concerns.

The current administration has adopted an assertive approach towards media-related issues. Recently, there have been legal proceedings involving the shutdown of Voice of America and disagreements between the president and The Associated Press over naming conventions for the Gulf of Mexico, which Trump has expressed a desire to rename as the Gulf of America.

Under Carr’s leadership, the FCC has embraced a more proactive role since Trump appointed him. This includes investigations into major news networks like ABC, CBS, and NBC News.

Carr’s correspondence with Iger noted how Disney, previously known for its successful content, now faces controversies concerning its DEI policies. Although he acknowledged reports suggesting Disney had scaled back some practices, Carr stressed that significant issues persist.

Last month, Axios reported Disney had revised certain policies, such as removing a website that showcased underrepresented communities. It also revised pre-movie warnings for films like “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan.” Instead of highlighting potential negative depictions, the warnings now state that the content is being presented as originally created and might include stereotypes.

Carr’s letter cited an article by conservative commentator Christopher Rufo labelling Disney as “the wokest place on Earth.” Some examples Carr referenced are from previous years, such as Disney-owned ABC’s policy requiring at least 50% of characters in pilot shows to be from underrepresented groups. He mentioned a 2021 statement by a Disney executive indicating some pilots were rejected for not meeting inclusion criteria.

Trump has not hidden his disapproval of DEI initiatives across various sectors, both public and private.

Carr stated, “At my direction, the FCC has already taken action to end its own promotion of DEI,” expressing satisfaction at seeing some regulated companies beginning to address what he considers discriminatory DEI practices.
