ST. PAUL, Minn. โ€” In an anticipated NHL showdown, Alex Ovechkin refrained from adding to his total career goals, which remain at 889, still needing six more to surpass Wayne Gretzkyโ€™s legendary record. Despite the lack of a goal, Ovechkin crafted an unforgettable moment on the rink in Minnesota.

The renowned three-time MVP, surrounded by ongoing discussions about his historic pursuit, showcased sportsmanship after the Washington Capitals fell to a 4-2 defeat. After the final whistle, Ovechkin rallied his Capitals teammates back onto the ice to commemorate retiring Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, a gesture marked by warmth and camaraderie as they exchanged a hug and laughter at center ice.

In what is expected to be Fleuryโ€™s final season, marking the 21st of his commendable career, he spent the evening on the bench while teammate Filip Gustavsson took to the goal. Ovechkin, recalling their numerous encounters during Fleuryโ€™s early years with Pittsburgh and beyond, took the morning to remind his team of the significance of their last clash. Over those years, Ovechkin managed to score 28 goals in 47 games against Fleury, a record against any goaltender.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve had countless matchups with โ€˜Oโ€™ (Ovechkin),โ€ said Washington coach Spencer Carbery. โ€œFacilitating that moment of gratitude reflects both his respect for Marc-Andre and the legacy Fleury leaves behind.โ€

Dylan Strome, who briefly shared the ice with Fleury in Chicago, noted the capacity of Fleury as both a player and person. โ€œHeโ€™s loved by all in the sport. A small gesture of respect was in order to honor him,โ€ Strome remarked.

Among the Wild, the deed was well-received. โ€œEverywhere we go, you see peopleโ€™s admiration for him. Itโ€™s impossible to find anyone with a negative word to say,โ€ commented Gustavsson.

The Wild too, even as opponents, acknowledged what this moment could mean for them in the future. โ€œItโ€™s wonderful to witness and participate in. Iโ€™m pleased for him,โ€ said defenseman Jonas Brodin. โ€œPlaying alongside such an influential figure is special, and those memories last well beyond the career,โ€ he added lovingly.
