The Los Angeles Sparks are set to honor Candace Parker by retiring her No. 3 jersey during halftime of their game versus the Chicago Sky on June 29.
Parker, a decorated seven-time WNBA All-Star, will see her jersey ascend to the rafters at Crypto.com Arena, joining the ranks of legends such as Lisa Leslie (No. 9) and Penny Toler (No. 11).
“This is an incredible honor, seeing my jersey admired among legends,” expressed Parker. “This moment is a tribute not just to me but to my family, teammates, and the unwavering support from the LA Sparks organization and fans. I owe everything to my parents’ belief in me, my brothers who are my heroes, and my wife and kids whose inspiration guides me every day.”
Parker was pivotal in leading the Sparks to their third WNBA championship in 2016, earning herself the Finals MVP accolade. Drafted first in 2008, she dedicated 13 seasons to the team, during which she accumulated an average of 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Additionally, in 2020, she was recognized as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Charged with the franchise’s all-time assists record (1,331), Parker also ranks second in rebounds, third in points, and has played in the fourth-highest number of games in Los Angeles history.
Reflecting on her career, Parker commented, “The Staples Center, now Crypto.com Arena, was where Lailaa was raised, a playground I grew up in. Holding the assists record signifies that basketball transcends individual achievements, focusing on inspiring others and contributing to a larger cause. This jersey signifies every moment, every connection, and all the love that has brought me here.”
The game against the Sky will feature a special ceremony to celebrate Parker’s enduring legacy, highlighting her achievements with both teams.
“Candace Parker’s legacy with the Los Angeles Sparks is profound, as she stands not only as one of the greatest players but also as a superb ambassador for our franchise and women’s basketball,” noted Sparks co-owner, Magic Johnson. “Retiring her No. 3 jersey honors her stellar career and the everlasting impact she has had on this organization, the WNBA, and Los Angeles. She remains an integral part of the Sparks family.”
This commemoration will be the second in Parker’s illustrious career, as the University of Tennessee retired her No. 3 jersey in 2014, celebrating her role in their back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008.
