In a tragic incident off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, a recreational submarine met a devastating fate as it sank during a voyage to explore the renowned coral reefs of the Red Sea. The provincial governor confirmed that the unfortunate sinking resulted in the death of six Russian tourists, while efforts led to the rescue of the remaining passengers, over two dozen of whom sustained injuries.
The exact cause behind the sudden submersion remains unclear, although the Russian consulate noted the event transpired approximately 1,000 meters, or 0.6 miles, from the shore. Reports indicate the submarine was engaged in a tour with 45 tourists along with five Egyptian crew members when the mishap occurred, prompting swift action from rescue teams. Red Sea governor Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi shared that 29 out of the 39 rescued tourists were injured and swiftly escorted to medical facilities. Fortunately, no reports suggest anyone was missing after the ordeal.
Hurghada remains a magnet for diving enthusiasts and tourists attracted by the vibrant marine life and the Red Sea’s expansive coral reefs. The submarine, named “Sindbad,” is known for its 40-minute underwater tours, offering a captivating experience through panoramic windows positioned at depths of 20-25 meters (65-80 feet). However, efforts to reach the company cited by the Russian consulate as operating the vessel ended in silence, as they did not respond to inquiries.
Russia’s Tass news agency highlighted that among the deceased Russians were at least two children, according to a statement from Russia’s consul in Hurghada. Initially, the consulate suggested all tourists on board were Russian nationals, yet Governor Hanafi later clarified that nationals from India, Norway, and Sweden were also present.
Footage released by the governor’s office depicted Governor Hanafi visiting survivors at the hospital. Among those he met were two Egyptian crewmembers and a Russian tourist sporting a head bandage. A particular family, with two young daughters, reassured Hanafi of their well-being with smiles, while an Indian father expressed concern and requested to see his daughter, who is critically ill, as doctors explained nearby.
This catastrophic event echoes a similar incident from November, when a tourist yacht sank due to adverse weather warnings, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives while 33 individuals were rescued. Despite tourism playing a crucial role in Egypt’s economy, frequent safety concerns and regional conflicts have led many travel companies to reconsider or limit Red Sea excursions.
