NEW YORK — The Episcopal bishop who made headlines earlier this year by upsetting President Donald Trump has secured a deal to release two books aimed at younger audiences. These works are inspired by the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde’s successful book, “How We Learn to Be Brave.”

Penguin Young Readers has announced that an adaptation suitable for young adults, crafted by author Bryan Bliss and titled “We Can Be Brave,” will be launched on October 25. Furthermore, a picture book titled “I Can Learn to Be Brave,” featuring illustrations by Holly Hatam, is planned for a summer 2026 release.

In her remarks regarding the new publications, Budde expressed her motivations: “Every day, children and adolescents encounter situations that demand immense bravery — from taking their first steps to navigating the unfamiliar environment of a new school. Through these books, I aim to convey to young readers that bravery is an essential part of life.” She emphasized the importance of facing fears and taking risks, stating, “The journey involves risk-taking, accepting mistakes, seeking help, and gradually acquiring skills in things that initially seem daunting. We are constantly learning about bravery, and many of our most defining moments occur when we are young.”

Earlier this year, Budde caught the attention of President Trump after she spoke at an inauguration prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral, which was attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and others. During the service, Budde made reference to Trump’s claim that God saved him from assassination, and she urged him to show compassion for migrants living in the country without legal permission and for the LGBTQ+ community.

“You have felt the providential hand of a loving God,” Budde stated. “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”

Following her comments, Trump took to social media, labeling Budde a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.” Despite the backlash, Budde’s book, “How We Learn to Be Brave,” which was initially released in 2023, gained further recognition after the January service.
