MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Jasmine Paolini is making her debut in the semifinals of the Miami Open.

The sixth seed achieved a significant victory by overcoming Magda Linette from Poland with a score of 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday. This win marks Paolini as the first female player to secure a spot in this year’s Miami Open semifinals.

Remarkably, Paolini becomes the first Italian woman to advance to the semifinals stage in this event. Previously, Italian players reached the quarterfinals six times, with Martina Trevisan being the latest in 2023.

In the semifinals, Paolini will compete against top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka emerged victorious over Qinwen Zheng of China in a tough quarterfinal match, winning 6-2, 7-5. The match faced delays due to a rainstorm, which set back many matches for several hours.

The quarterfinals continue on the other side of the women’s draw on Wednesday. Fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula from the United States will go against Britain’s promising Emma Radacanu, while second-seeded Iga Swiatek faces off against Alexandra Eala from the Philippines.
