STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford University has decided to part ways with football coach Troy Taylor following recent findings of past investigations regarding his conduct. This announcement marks a significant step by Andrew Luck, the general manager of Stanford’s football program, who has been assessing the team since taking on his role.

“Since assuming my responsibilities, I have been conducting a thorough evaluation of the entire Stanford football program,” said Luck in a statement on Tuesday. “It became evident that certain areas of the program required changes. Additionally, recent attention has been given to investigations related to coach Taylor’s conduct in previous years. After careful consideration, I have concluded that a new direction is necessary for our program. After discussions with university leadership, I believe it is best for the program to move on from coach Taylor.”

Last week, reports surfaced that Taylor had been the subject of two investigations since assuming the coaching position before the 2023 season. These investigations were initiated due to allegations of hostile and aggressive behavior towards female staff members, as well as personal attacks. According to reports, both investigations determined that Taylor’s conduct did not align with Stanford’s conduct standards.

Another report noted Taylor had retaliated against a compliance official responsible for identifying seven minor NCAA violations by attempting to have her reassigned. Investigative comments suggested a significant level of animosity towards the university’s compliance office, indicating a troubled dynamic within the program.

Luck expressed gratitude to Taylor for his efforts but stressed the importance of maintaining a constructive atmosphere at Stanford. “Our program is rooted in rich traditions, outstanding student-athletes, and a clear vision for future success. This vision hinges on fostering a positive, inclusive, and winning culture. I am certain that these values will help restore Stanford’s place among the elite in college football.”

In November, Luck was hired to manage the football program and reports directly to Stanford President Jonathan Levin. As athletic director Bernard Muir is set to depart at the academic year’s end, the search for his successor continues. Concurrently, Luck must identify a head coach capable of restoring national prominence to the Cardinal football team.

From Luck’s initial tenure as starting quarterback in 2009 to the conclusion of the 2018 season, Stanford achieved significant success, including appearances in three Rose Bowls and two other BCS bowls. However, in the past six seasons, the program has experienced a downturn with a record of 20-46, which ranks it poorly among power conference teams.

Following the resignation of David Shaw in 2022, Taylor was appointed as the head coach and was tasked with revitalizing a struggling team. Previously, Taylor had contributed to Sacramento State’s transformation into a formidable FCS team. Nevertheless, his two seasons at Stanford also ended with 3-9 records, documenting the program’s challenges in recent years, especially at home against FBS opponents.
