PARIS – French actor Gérard Depardieu, embroiled in a significant legal battle, addressed allegations of sexual misconduct on Tuesday. Now 76, Depardieu conceded to using coarse and inflammatory language towards a woman accusing him of sexual assault and admitted to grabbing her hips during an on-set incident, yet firmly denied any sexual intent behind his actions. This marked his first testimony at a pivotal trial in Paris.
The accuser, relaying her ordeal to the court, depicted Depardieu as acting “like a madman,” taking “pleasure in frightening me.” This testimony came as proceedings entered their second day, centered around events occurring in 2021 during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters”). Co-workers alleged inappropriate conduct by Depardieu, including groping them during production. The chief judge has scheduled two additional days for the trial, concluding on Thursday.
On the stand, Depardieu admitted to his use of vulgar language and physical contact during a heated discussion about artistic differences but vehemently refuted the notion of being a sexual predator, boldly stating, “I don’t touch women’s butts.” He attributed his erratic behavior to discomfort caused by hot conditions due to his weight, saying, “I understand perfectly if she’s a bit upset.”
Depardieu acknowledged his actions might have left the woman feeling “suffocated,” but insisted it was a non-sexual form of aggression. The actor, emphatically denying the sexual assault claims, exclaimed, “But certainly not sexual. Non!” If convicted, Depardieu could face a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of 75,000 euros ($81,000).
The alleged victim vividly described the assault, claiming Depardieu immobilized her in a narrow corridor, groping her repeatedly, exemplified by the motions he made on her body. She struggled to break free due to his strength and felt sheer terror at his behavior, which she perceived as deliberate intimidation.
Continuing her testimony, the woman recounted obscene language used by Depardieu and his suggestions of further sexual misconduct. She noted his composed demeanor in court contradicted the volatile and inappropriate behavior he displayed on set.
As the presiding incident unfolded, another plaintiff has yet to present evidence. This 34-year-old assistant’s testimony is highly anticipated as the trial progresses.
Depardieu lamented the impact the allegations have had on his career, revealing he hasn’t secured a leading role since 2022, amidst rising accusations tarnishing his public image. Renowned for his prolific work, including over 250 films and an Oscar nomination in 1991, the harsh scrutiny symbolizes a potential turning point in addressing sexual violence and power dynamics in the entertainment industry.
Despite his esteemed status — shared by admirers such as French President Emmanuel Macron, who praised him as a “great actor”— Depardieu faces substantial personal and professional challenges. He remains firm in his denial of the allegations and expressed regret for any distress caused by his acknowledged rough demeanor. The proceedings underscore broader societal conversations on accountability and justice, reminiscent of other high-profile cases challenging systemic issues within France and beyond.
This trial represents a momentous examination of cultural attitudes toward sexual misconduct, particularly within influential circles, paving the way for potential shifts towards holding powerful figures accountable for unacceptable behaviors.
