In Sacramento, California, Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla is hopeful for a swift recovery for star player Jayson Tatum, who left the game against the Sacramento Kings in the third quarter after sustaining a right ankle injury.
Tatum, leading the Celtics in points, was injured following a difficult 3-point shot attempt. The incident occurred when Kings’ center Domantas Sabonis, standing at 6-foot-11, committed a foul resulting in a Flagrant 1 call. Tatum’s right foot inadvertently landed on Sabonis’ foot, causing him to fall to the court immediately.
“He seems to be doing okay,” Mazzulla remarked. “I didn’t witness the play, but it appears the officials made the correct decision. We’re thankful he managed to take the free throws. He’s currently getting the necessary care.”
While on the floor, Tatum received attention from the Celtics’ medical team before being escorted to the bench. He succeeded in making one of his two free throws, pushing Boston to a 79-68 lead with 3:35 remaining in the quarter, before leaving the game for further evaluation.
Post-game, Tatum scored a total of 25 points and was observed limping slightly through the locker room but did not speak with the press.
“I literally just asked him how he was doing and he said, ‘OK,’” Mazzulla noted. “He’ll put in the effort needed to ensure he recovers swiftly.”
