In Coral Gables, Florida, Cam Ward had a clear message for the Tennessee Titans on Monday: “I’m solidifying it today,” signaling his determination to be considered for the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. The former quarterback from the Miami Hurricanes will soon discover if this claim turns into reality. With all 32 NFL teams represented at Miami’s pro day, Ward showcased his diverse throwing skills through a 45-minute session, including short and deep passes, slants, sideline routes, and even some sidearm throws.

For the grand finale, Ward orchestrated a trick play, securing a touchdown catch from receiver Xavier Restrepo. This extraordinary performance was Ward’s moment to shine, leaving the Tennessee Titans, holders of the top draft pick, to ponder their decision. “They finally got to see me throw in person. That should be all they need to see,” Ward commented. Regardless of the Titans’ decision, Ward emphasized his eagerness to join any team and pursue his passion for football.

As Miami’s pro day unfolded, Ward was the star attraction, viewed by many as a strong contender for the first overall pick, with the draft set to begin on April 24. This was Ward’s first public throwing display since the Pop-Tarts Bowl last December. He had opted out of throwing at the NFL Combine, planning to showcase his skills at Miami’s pro day alongside the “best receiving corps in the country.”

Miami Hurricanes’ coach Mario Cristobal touted Ward as “one of one,” but the decision of whether he will be picked first lies with the Titans. The Tennessee front office attended pro day in full force, with personnel including Chad Brinker, Brian Callahan, Mike Borgonzi, and others intently observing Ward’s performance. Ward also engaged in friendly exchanges with the Titans’ representatives, exuding confidence as he completed his session.

Ward, eager to learn the ropes of his future team’s playbook, ended his collegiate career with 158 touchdown passes, a Division I record. His impressive yardage total of 18,189 places him third in NCAA history, achieved across his tenures at Incarnate Word, Washington State, and Miami. Ward’s single season at Miami saw him rewrite the school’s record book, setting new marks for yards, completions, and touchdown passes, among others.

Ward’s meteoric rise from a zero-star recruit at Incarnate Word to an AP All-American and the Atlantic Coast Conference’s offensive player of the year is remarkable. Now, living under the watchful eye of the entire football world, he stands on the brink of being a top NFL draft pick. If selected, Ward would become the first Miami player chosen in the first round since 2021, and the Hurricanes’ first offensive player to go in the first round since 2017. Ward could join elite company as Miami’s third No. 1 overall pick in the draft, following in the footsteps of Vinny Testaverde and Russell Maryland.
