PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University’s women’s basketball program will see a new head at its helm as Winston Gandy, previously an assistant coach at South Carolina, takes charge. This change follows Molly Miller’s departure for Arizona State.
Gandy was warmly welcomed during his introductory press conference at Grand Canyon on Monday. However, he soon returned to his duties at South Carolina to continue supporting the Gamecocks as they aim to defend their national title. Gandy succeeds Miller, who compiled an impressive 117-38 record over five seasons and led the Lopes to the NCAA Tournament this year before moving to Arizona State.
“I’m beyond honored and absolutely thrilled to be the head coach at Grand Canyon University,” Gandy expressed in a statement shared by the university. “Grand Canyon is a truly special place, and we will continue to show the world exactly what we’re about.”
This marks Gandy’s second season with South Carolina after serving three seasons as Duke’s associate head coach. His career also includes time as Maryland’s director of recruiting operations during the 2013-14 season, as well as roles in player development for the Washington Wizards and an assistant coaching stint at Rice.
Dawn Staley, South Carolina’s coach, endorsed Gandy, highlighting his “incredible work ethic, recruiting talent, and passion for the game.” She praised Gandy as one of the most dedicated workers and adept recruiters, passionate about fostering genuine relationships both on and off the court.
Gandy takes charge of a Grand Canyon program on a high note, coming off a stellar 32-3 season. The team had an impressive 30-game winning streak halted only by a 73-60 defeat by Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
