TRENTON, N.J. — Ed Durr, a Republican from New Jersey who gained attention after unseating a prominent Democratic lawmaker in 2021, announced on Monday that he is withdrawing from this year’s governor’s race for the GOP nomination. Durr, known for his outspoken support for former President Donald Trump, revealed before the June primary that he has not raised sufficient funds to qualify for matching assistance, which would result in his exclusion from debates.
Durr expressed his support for Bill Spadea, a conservative radio personality who is also seeking Trump’s backing. “I am not going away,” Durr stated, affirming his commitment to advocating for conservative principles and hinting at future political opportunities.
The current Democratic Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, is unable to seek a third term due to term limits. Alongside New Jersey, Virginia is also holding a gubernatorial election this year. Among those vying for the GOP nomination are state Sen. Jon Bramnick, known for his critical stance on Trump, former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, who had once opposed Trump but is now supportive, and the aforementioned Spadea.
The Democratic Party has a notable registration advantage in New Jersey, with almost one million more members than the Republicans. Despite this, while New Jersey has shown a strong Democratic leaning in presidential and Senate elections, the Republican Party has found success in gubernatorial races during odd-numbered years. Six Democrats are currently in the running for their party’s nomination as they aim to retain the governorship in a traditionally blue state.
