TURIN, Italy — Tensions between former coach Thiago Motta and the Juventus squad appeared to intensify on Monday, coinciding with the arrival of Igor Tudor for his inaugural training session as the team’s new coach. Rarely have the events leading to a coaching change been so visible, underscored by the minimal public support Motta received upon his exit.

After Juventus suffered a couple of heavy defeats in Serie A, resulting in seven goals conceded and none scored, Motta was relieved of his duties on Sunday. The team’s struggles meant they were not only eliminated from all competitions but also in danger of missing out on a Champions League spot.

Motta had been leading Juventus for the first season after enjoying a successful stint with Bologna. Yet, it seems several key players had become disillusioned, contributing to the Bianconeri’s disappointing exit from both the Champions League and the Italian Cup. Amidst the silence from the Juventus players, young Belgian Samuel Mbangula stood alone in acknowledging Motta’s impact. Mbangula, introduced to the senior team by Motta, took to social media to express his gratitude, stating, “Thank you for everything mister… I wish you the best for the future.”

While Juventus players kept their distance, coaching peers like Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan and Gian Piero Gasperini of Atalanta showed support for Motta. Inzaghi commented on Motta’s capabilities, believing he would quickly return to coaching roles given his talent.

Motta himself addressed the fans briefly, expressing gratitude towards the club’s ownership and everyone who supported him during his tenure. He emphasized the determination and improvement-oriented approach he maintained while at the club.

Meanwhile, Tudor, who played for Juventus from 1998 until 2007 and previously served as an assistant coach, took charge of his first training session. Only players not on international duty participated in the session, with the rest expected to return midweek. Tudor’s contract extends until June, with an automatic renewal clause if Juventus qualifies for the Champions League.

Juventus, sitting just a point behind fourth-place Bologna, faces a crucial match against Genoa on Saturday. Tudor’s coaching experience spreads across teams like Udinese, Hellas Verona, and Lazio, and his history with Juventus includes a partnership with Andrea Pirlo during the 2020-21 season.
