MESA, Ariz. — Athletics’ second baseman, Zack Gelof, is set to undergo surgery on his right hand and will begin the upcoming season on the injured list.
The procedure, which addresses a hamate bone fracture, will be performed by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles. This announcement was made by Manager Mark Kotsay during the team’s spring training session on Sunday.
Gelof sustained the injury after being hit by a pitch delivered by Cleveland reliever Paul Sewald on Wednesday, after which he underwent an MRI exam on Saturday to assess the injury.
The 25-year-old athlete was a second-round pick from Virginia in the 2021 amateur draft. Last season, Gelof hit .211, contributing 17 home runs and 49 RBIs, alongside stealing 25 bases over a span of 138 games while playing regularly.
