In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic event unfolded on a highway near New Orleans when a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy lost his life while attempting to halt a fleeing vehicle, according to local authorities. The incident involved the deployment of a spike strip intended to stop the vehicle, when Sgt. Grant Candies was tragically struck and killed during the process on Interstate 10, as reported by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The pursuit began after one deputy initiated a traffic stop, prompting the driver to flee at high speed. The chase concluded violently as the perpetrator, with four passengers in tow, collided with a police vehicle in the eastern section of New Orleans. The police officer involved in the crash incurred injuries while trying to join the pursuit on the interstate, according to officials. Both the officer and the fleeing vehicle’s occupants were hospitalized, with the officer later being discharged and the others reportedly in stable condition.

Authorities detailed that the 17-year-old driver, responsible for the chase and subsequent events, was initially arrested in New Orleans and later transferred to St. Tammany Parish. He now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated flight. Officials also indicated the possibility of further arrests or charges stemming from the incident.

Sgt. Grant Candies, aged 37, leaves behind a wife and two children, having served the sheriff’s office since 2016. His exemplary service record included saving two lives in 2023, earning him the title of Deputy of the Year. He was dedicated to his role as a field training officer, offering guidance and mentorship to new deputies during his shifts.

“Sgt. Candies epitomized the kind of dedicated deputy cherished by any agency,” remarked Sheriff Randy Smith. “He was a pillar of support and wisdom for his teammates, and his journey into law enforcement was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family, community, and a noble calling beyond personal gain.”
