Segway has issued a recall for approximately 220,000 of its scooters distributed throughout the United States due to safety concerns that pose a risk of injury. Instances have been reported where users have suffered injuries, including bruises and broken bones.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning regarding the Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters, which feature a folding mechanism that may malfunction during use. This flaw can cause the handlebars or stem to collapse unexpectedly, potentially leading to accidents and severe injuries.
The recall notice highlights 68 reported cases of folding mechanism failures, resulting in 20 known injuries ranging from abrasions and bruises to lacerations and fractures. As a precaution, Segway urges all owners of these scooters to discontinue use immediately. Affected consumers can contact Segway to obtain a complimentary maintenance kit, which contains the necessary tools and instructions to inspect and adjust the folding mechanism to ensure safety.
Segway emphasizes that periodic checks and adjustments of the folding mechanism may be needed over time based on riding conditions. No returns or replacements will be offered as part of this recall process.
The recalled scooters were manufactured in China and Malaysia and were available for purchase through major U.S. retailers like Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club. Additionally, they were sold online through platforms such as Segway.com and Amazon.com. These scooters were on the market from January 2020 until February 2025 and were priced between $600 and $1,000.
