NAIROBI, Kenya — In a fierce assault, militants from Somalia targeted a Kenyan police camp close to the border, resulting in the tragic death of six reservists, according to a statement released by Kenyan authorities on Sunday.
The violent attack occurred in Garissa County and was orchestrated by al-Shabab militants, known to have affiliations with al-Qaida. During the incursion, four other police reservists suffered severe injuries.
The spokesperson for the police, Michael Muchiri, revealed that the militants not only attacked the camp, using firearms and knives, but they also ransacked the premises and absconded with weapons. Though the exact number of militant casualties remains undisclosed, some of the attackers reportedly lost their lives in the skirmish.

The region in proximity to the Kenya-Somalia border is notoriously vulnerable, having frequently been a target for such militant invasions.
Last week, a travel advisory was issued by the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, warning American citizens to avoid the region due to increased threats of attacks and possible kidnappings.
In a related incident, tensions have been on the rise as a Kenyan police officer stationed at a border post in Mandera County was shot dead by individuals believed to be Somali intelligence operatives. Kenyan officials suggested that this attack was in response to the detention of Somali nationals by Kenyan forces, who reportedly were plotting an attack on a local infrastructure project.
Somalia has amplified its security operations against al-Shabab militants since 2022, targeting their strongholds in rural territories. This effort is bolstered by the support of an African Union stabilization mission comprised of troops from various nations dedicated to assisting Somalia in its ongoing battle against al-Shabab.
