SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — In a recent trade move, the Colorado Rockies secured infielder Tyler Freeman from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for outfielder Nolan Jones. This transaction aims to bolster the Rockies’ lineup following the loss of Thairo Estrada, who is sidelined with a broken right wrist. Freeman, 25, brings versatility to Colorado’s roster, having played several positions including second base, third base, shortstop, and center field in the major leagues.
Nolan Jones, 26, is now making a return to the Cleveland organization having previously debuted in the major leagues with them in 2022. His first stint with the Guardians followed his selection as a second-round draft pick in 2016. Jones was initially traded to the Rockies in November 2022 in a deal involving infielder Juan Brito. Last season, Jones’ performance was hampered by a back injury, restricting him to just 79 games in which he batted .227, hit three home runs, and managed 28 RBIs.
The 2023 season was remarkable for Jones, as he upped his game, posting a .297 batting average with 20 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases over the course of 106 games. His impressive form saw him finish fourth in the voting for the National League Rookie of the Year.
Conversely, Freeman began the 2024 season as Cleveland’s starting center fielder on opening day. During this past season, he posted a .209 batting average with seven homers and 32 RBIs across 118 games, contributing to the Guardians’ successful run to the top of the AL Central. Freeman was initially drafted by Cleveland in the second round in 2017.
Looking forward to the upcoming games, the Rockies are set to play their first match at Tampa Bay on Friday, while the Guardians will kick off their season at Kansas City on Thursday.
